Diego Ventura and Daniel Luque Open the Main Gate in the First Bullfight of the Begoña Fair 2024. Talavante, despite his effort, leaves empty-handed after failing with the sword.
The first event of the 2024 Begoña Fair in Gijón began with a bang. Diego Ventura and Daniel Luque were the stars of the afternoon, being carried out of the ring on the shoulders of the crowd after each cutting two ears. Alejandro Talavante showcased flashes of brilliance but struggled to seal the deal with the sword, also suffering a dramatic tumble without serious injury. The mixed bullfight, featuring bulls from Los Espartales for the rejoneador (mounted bullfighter) and La Quinta for traditional matadors, offered a varied and thrilling spectacle, pleasing the nearly full stands at El Bibio.
Diego Ventura dazzled from the start with an exceptional first bull from Los Espartales, securing two ears after a masterful performance with his horses Nómada and Bronce. The display included moments of great risk and spectacle, particularly during the banderillas segment. With the fourth bull, Ventura had fewer opportunities due to the animal’s challenges but showcased his skill and control. However, a missed blow with the sword denied him another trophy.
Alejandro Talavante had a difficult afternoon. He exhibited moments of quality with his first bull, handling it with grace and fluidity, but couldn’t string together a cohesive performance, and his failures with the sword left him without any reward. In the fifth bout, Talavante delivered a classic and stylish display, particularly excelling with his right-hand passes. Unfortunately, poor swordsmanship and a tumble, though without serious injury, dashed his hopes of success.
Daniel Luque demonstrated his mastery and poise throughout. Faced with the third bull, which offered limited options, Luque relied on his experience to draw out several noteworthy passes. It was with the sixth bull, however, that he truly captivated the audience. His performance was filled with rhythm and fluidity, striking a chord with the crowd. After a clean and effective sword thrust, he earned two ears and a triumphant exit through the main gate.
The event was marked by a poignant moment of silence in memory of Loli Menéndez, the plaza’s caretaker, who passed away this year.
