Enrique Ponce bids farewell at the Feria de Begoña with a triumphant exit on shoulders alongside Ginés Marín, while Roca Rey claims a consolation prize in a thrilling afternoon marked by the fans’ enthusiasm and the quality of Núñez del Cuvillo bulls.

Enrique Ponce and Ginés Marín sealed the final bullfight of the 2024 Feria de Begoña with a joint exit on shoulders at El Bibio. The veteran maestro from Chiva said his goodbye to the Gijón audience with a performance filled with emotion, while Ginés Marín displayed skill and elegance. Roca Rey, despite his troubles with the sword, managed to cut an ear from the fifth bull after an impressive showing.

Ponce’s Masterful Farewell in Gijón

Enrique Ponce was the star of the afternoon. From the first bull, the Valencian torero demonstrated his characteristic grace, surprising the crowd by starting his faena on his knees with deep and stylish passes. Although he lost the chance for trophies due to errors with the sword, the audience gave him a huge ovation. In the fourth bull, the last he would ever fight in Gijón, Ponce crafted an emotional performance with sublime series of natural passes, set to the music of Caridad del Guadalquivir. This time, his sword was precise, and he was awarded two ears, receiving a warm farewell from the spectators.

Ginés Marín Shows Class and Technique

Ginés Marín made the most of the two bulls in his lot, which were less promising than others, but the young Extremaduran torero exhibited his technique and resourcefulness. He earned his first ear with a measured faena to the third bull, showcasing long and well-tempered passes. In the sixth bull, a more challenging one, Ginés displayed great control and a masterful sword thrust, cutting another ear and securing his place alongside Ponce for the exit on shoulders.

Roca Rey: Power Without Full Reward

Peruvian matador Andrés Roca Rey left a strong impression despite his struggles with the sword. In his second bull, he demonstrated impressive power, dominating the bull with forceful, commanding passes. However, the sword deprived him of more trophies, although the crowd awarded him an ear for his performance with the fifth bull, one of the most applauded of the day.
