Sometimes, last-minute replacements end up becoming the highlight of a fair. That was exactly what happened on 18 August 2019 at the Plaza de Toros de Ciudad Real, during the third bullfight of the Virgen del Prado Fair, when Daniel Luque stepped in for El Fandi and turned what could have been an ordinary afternoon into something truly memorable.
The stands were half full, with spectators eager to see Aníbal Ruiz, Sébastien Castella, and the bullfighter from Gerena, who ultimately became the main focus of the day. Bulls from Torrehandilla and Torreherberos were fought—uneven in performance, some lacking strength, others more temperamental, but all demanding enough to separate good bullfighters from great ones.
And there was Luque—calm, composed, and masterful—in full command of timing and distance. His first bull, weak in the legs, required care and patience. Luque treated it gently, measuring each pass and each touch, crafting a work full of rhythm and sensitivity. The bull’s lack of strength limited the showiness, but the Sevillian’s finesse and depth soon captured the crowd’s attention. After a superb sword thrust, the audience rose to demand two ears, which the president duly awarded.
With the sixth bull of the afternoon, a difficult jabonero with little willingness to charge, the tone changed. The animal resisted and threw his head into the muleta dangerously, refusing to cooperate. Luque stood firm, showing composure and experience, trying to extract what little there was to offer. He finished with a clean estocada and received a well-deserved ovation for his effort and professionalism.
Meanwhile, Aníbal Ruiz, the local favourite, cut one ear in his first appearance, while Castella alternated between silence and an ovation.
In the end, that afternoon in Ciudad Real had one undeniable star: Daniel Luque. His performance—beyond the trophies—was a masterclass in sensible, authentic bullfighting, proving once again that you don’t need to be on the original billing to walk away as the true protagonist.
