Review of the Ciudad Real bullfight – 20 August 2026
Víctor Puerto, Daniel Luque and Samuel Navalón celebrate a shared triumph in Ciudad Real, earning a traditional shoulder-high exit after impressive performances against bulls from Araúz de Robles.
On Thursday, 20 August, Ciudad Real Bullring witnessed one of the most memorable afternoons of its Virgen del Prado Bullfighting Fair. Víctor Puerto, Daniel Luque and Samuel Navalón all left the arena through the Puerta Grande (Great Gate), carried on the shoulders of supporters following a successful bullfight in which all three matadors won over the crowd.
The Araúz de Robles breeding ranch presented an impressive selection of bulls, notable for their size, strength and varied behaviour. The animals provided opportunities for moments of outstanding bullfighting while also testing the skill and experience of the matadors. Several bulls received applause as they entered the ring, reflecting the audience’s appreciation of their impressive appearance.
The afternoon held particular significance for Víctor Puerto, who was bidding farewell to bullfighting fans in Ciudad Real. Daniel Luque once again demonstrated his excellent current form, while Samuel Navalón delivered an outstanding performance, winning three ears and producing his finest work against the sixth bull.
Víctor Puerto Bids Farewell Through the Great Gate
Víctor Puerto‘s afternoon was marked by a dramatic contrast between early misfortune and eventual triumph.
His first bull initially showed promising qualities, but shortly after the faena began, the animal injured one of its front legs, bringing an abrupt end to any realistic opportunity for an impressive performance. Puerto received no applause or trophies.
The fourth bull gave him the chance to make amends. Puerto demonstrated calm, controlled bullfighting, carefully managing the animal’s charges and building a performance that connected with the spectators.
The crowd called for trophies, and the president of the bullfight awarded him both ears.
The achievement carried particular emotional significance, as it marked Puerto’s farewell appearance in Ciudad Real. The experienced matador concluded his history at the bullring with a traditional shoulder-high exit, recognising both his performance and his long professional career.
Daniel Luque Combines Elegance and Determination
Daniel Luque demonstrated his ability to adapt his technique to the different characteristics of his opponents.
Against his first bull, he produced a performance defined by precision, smooth movements and excellent timing. His elegant handling of the muleta, the small red cape used during the final stage of the bullfight, impressed the audience.
Despite receiving an official warning before completing the final sword thrust, Luque was awarded one ear.
His encounter with the fifth bull required a different approach. The animal proved more reluctant to charge and demanded considerable concentration and determination from the Seville-born matador.
Luque responded with confidence, carefully judging each encounter while continuing to seek opportunities to demonstrate his skill.
His efforts earned him another ear, bringing his total to two trophies and securing his place alongside his fellow matadors in the traditional shoulder-high exit.
Samuel Navalón Delivers the Afternoon's Most Complete Performance
Samuel Navalón emerged as one of the outstanding figures of the bullfight.
His final tally of three ears reflected an afternoon characterised by ambition, intelligence and an impressive ability to make the most of the opportunities offered by his bulls.
Facing the third bull, which proved challenging and offered limited opportunities, the young matador relied on technical skill and his ability to anticipate the animal’s movements.
He successfully adapted his approach and delivered a determined performance that earned him one ear after an official warning.
The sixth bull offered more favourable conditions, which Navalón exploited with confidence and precision.
His performance gradually increased in intensity, combining commitment, technical ability and a strong connection with the spectators.
The crowd responded enthusiastically, and the president awarded him both ears.
With three trophies overall, Navalón demonstrated his ability to succeed against demanding bulls and provided one of the most memorable moments of the fair so far.
Araúz de Robles Presents an Impressive and Varied Bullfight
The bulls from the Araúz de Robles breeding ranch were another important feature of the afternoon.
The animals stood out for their imposing appearance and displayed a range of behaviours, with the fourth and sixth bulls proving particularly noteworthy.
The first bull also showed promising qualities during the opening stages, but an injury to one of its front legs prevented the audience from discovering its full potential.
Overall, the varied characteristics of the bulls allowed the matadors to demonstrate different approaches to bullfighting and highlighted the importance of understanding and responding to each animal’s movements.
Among the supporting bullfighters, known as banderilleros, Antonio Manuel Punta and Jesús Arruga received special recognition after placing the banderillas, the decorated barbed sticks used during the second stage of the bullfight, in the second bull.
Both men removed their hats to acknowledge the applause from the crowd.
Ciudad Real Celebrates an Unforgettable Afternoon
The third event of the Virgen del Prado Bullfighting Fair attracted an audience filling more than two-thirds of the bullring on a pleasantly warm afternoon.
The atmosphere contributed to a memorable event that ended with all three matadors celebrating a shared triumph.
However, the afternoon began on a solemn note.
Following the traditional paseíllo, the ceremonial parade of bullfighters before the event, spectators observed a minute’s silence in memory of Eduardo Rodríguez, who had served as the bullring’s surgeon for several decades.
The tribute was followed by an afternoon filled with emotion and sporting achievement.
Víctor Puerto’s triumphant farewell, Daniel Luque’s technical excellence and Samuel Navalón’s impressive determination combined to produce an outstanding result.
The lasting image of the afternoon was that of the three matadors leaving Ciudad Real Bullring together, carried shoulder-high by supporters in recognition of their achievements.
